Digital Collections in the Friedheim Library

About this collection

This collection, drawn from the rare manuscript music and original letters collected at the Peabody Institute, reveals personal aspects of the classical music world of the United States and Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many items originate from or were collected by musicians with varying degrees of connection to Peabody. The documents range from postcards to essays and from sketches to copyists’ manuscript parts to autograph scores; some of the items carry personal dedications. Highlights of the collection include Beethoven’s manuscript for “Da ist das Werk” (WoO 197), music and correspondence with direct links to Baltimore, and letters penned by Mendelssohn, Liszt, Landowska, Bloch, Grieg, Dickens, and Emerson.
